Today, I sat over the other side of church and found myself close to the coloured glass wall.
Our church building is 50 years old next Saturday so it is fairly contemporary in its decoration but I adore these beautiful coloured panels with the coloured cross drawn showing the community and what goes on there. Just a simple line of coloured glass in rainbow shades imbues such a warmth and cosiness despite the leaky roof and wind howling in the church tower.
It got me thinking about the colours of Christmas.
Part of the beauty of Christmas are all the colours around. It is such a dull and dingy time of year in countries in the Northern-Hemisphere. Thus, we want to adorn our homes in bright colours. Ornaments that remind us of happy memories, shiny baubles that reflect the lights and cast a warm reflection around the room, We nestle close to dress in bright-hued Christmas sweaters, delight in foliage that is bright green and berries that are red and white, wrap our presents in bright paper or glittering metallics. By sharing and searching for a rainbow we are trying to cling to all the aspects of light and the joys and blessings of life when they seem lost and missing. We are seeking warmth, colour and hope.
It then made me think of this beautiful song that CBC bought and his school choir are singing this week in their concert called 'The Colours of Christmas. It has that usual John Rutter beauty, awe and wonder and a heart-rending melody.
The lyrics are rather nice too!
Green for the ivy that grows by the wall,White for the mistletoe that hangs in the hall,Red for the berries that shine in the snow,Orange and yellow for mornings first glow.
These are the colours of Christmas
Let them shine all over the earth These are the colours of happiness, The joy of a new baby's birth.
Blue for the robe of his mother so mild,Gold for the precious gift they brought to the child,Silver the starlight to shine through your sleep,And a rainbowfor allthe sweetdreamsyou will keep
These are the colours of Christmas. Let them shine all over the earth! These are the colours of happiness, The joy of a news baby's birth.

I wish you joy in the colours of Christmas. May they keep your heart warm and loving.
